BHRT and ovarian cancer

Due to the recent news on HRT and ovarian cancer we have asked one of our BHRT specialists, Doctor Jan Toledano, to shine some light on the difference between HRT and Bio-identical HRT and their relation to ovarian cancer.

According to Dr Toledano, while conventional HRT may increase the risk of some ovarian cancers, progesterone – the hormone given as part of Bio-identical HRT – can be protective against ovarian cancer.

Two studies from 2010 and 2011 in the journal Gynaecological Endocrinology show that progesterone has a protective effect against ovarian and endometrial cancer. The data also indicates that progesterone can act as an antioxidant.

BHRT uses protective estriol (an oestrogen) alongside progesterone in low doses to allow women to function at their best while getting protection from cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis – with no increased risk of ovarian cancer.

Dr Toledano also adds that one should bear in mind that the main risk factors for ovarian cancer are still obesity and a family history of ovarian cancer, along with some fertility treatments and oestrogen-only HRT.
