Interview with Dr Marion Gluck: “The Hormone Doctor”
When did you first start prescribing bio-identical hormones?
I have been prescribing bio-identical hormones for fifteen years now. I first discovered them in Australia when I worked in a clinic that was situated next door to a compounding pharmacy. I came over to the UK and set up The Marion Gluck Clinic so that I could pioneer this approach in England and Europe.
What does The Marion Gluck Clinic do?
The Marion Gluck Clinic is an innovative medical centre specialising in bio-identical hormones and preventative medicine, located in West London. We currently have three doctors working at the clinic: Dr Jan Toledano, Dr Anu Arasu and myself. Dr Toledano and Dr Arasu completed an accreditation programme with me and have been fully trained in bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. All of our doctors are also registered with the General Medical Council. We aim to balance hormones, maintain health and improve energy in our patients. Our main focus is to keep our patients healthy, active and happy
What are bio-identical hormones and what hormones do you prescribe?
Bio-identical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones found in your own body; this means that the body recognises them as its own. Bio-identical hormones are safe and have minimal side effects. We prescribe progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone to our patients to help them overcome their symptoms and feel happy, energetic and healthy again. All of our prescriptions are tailor made to each individual patient, which is very important because every single patient is different.
Describe a ‘typical patient’ at the Marion Gluck Clinic
A typical patient at the Marion Gluck Clinic is a 40-60 year old woman who has low libido, hot flushes, anxiety, mood swings and insomnia. Most of my patients tell me that they don’t feel like themselves any more.
Why is this?
This is because as women and men age, their hormone levels naturally decline. This leads to unwelcome and uncomfortable symptoms; depression, anxiety and insomnia are frequent symptoms of declining hormone levels as well as the more conventional hot flushes and night sweats. By replenishing and balancing hormone levels we can help our patients to feel like their normal selves again. Both women and men need a balanced endocrine system as hormones regulate every function in our body. When our hormones are well adjusted we feel healthy, energetic and more in control of our lives.
Can men take bio-identical hormones too?
Absolutely, men go through the so-called ‘mid-life crisis’ which is their male menopause, also known as the andropause. Many men benefit from testosterone supplementation as this can help to improve their libido, energy, mood and can also increase muscle mass.
